Manuscript Submission Policy:

It is the policy of New Directions to consider unsolicited submissions. However, as a small independent publishing house with a small editorial staff and a large list of titles already scheduled for publication, it is extremely rare that we are able to accept an unsolicted work for publication. Please keep this in mind when choosing whether to submit your work to us.

Currently, New Directions focuses primarily on fiction in translation, avant garde American fiction, and experimental poetry by American and foreign authors. If your work does not fall into one of those categories, you would probably do best to submit your work elsewhere.

We are not interested in considering books from the following categories: juvenile or young adult, occult or paranormal, genre fiction (formula romances, sci-fi or westerns), art and crafts, and inspirational poetry.

If you wish to submit a query letter or a manuscript, you may do so by mail to the address below. A query letter should include a brief description of your submission, your writing credentials, and any experience, professional or otherwise, which is relevant to your submission. For manuscript submissions, a sample of the work (10 - 30 pages) will usually suffice, along with a cover letter and CV.

If you require notification of receipt, please use Delivery Confirmation or a similar service -- we cannot notify you when we receive your manuscript by mail.

New Directions takes no responsibility for the loss or damage of submitted materials - please DO NOT submit irreplaceable materials.

All submissions must be exclusive to New Directions.

Please allow at least 3 - 4 months for our response.

NO PHONE CALLS PLEASE.

Send query letters or manuscripts to:

Editorial Assistant
New Directions Publishing Corp.
80 8th Avenue
New York, NY 10011

Submissions must include either a self-addressed, stamped envelope or an e-mail address to receive a reply.

Internships:

**Please note: We are NOT currently seeking interns for Summer 2008. Please do not contact us about summer internships, as all of our needs are already met. However, we are considering applications for internships for Fall 2008.**

New Directions offers full- and part-time college internships on a rolling basis at our Manhattan office. On your application please indicate clearly your desired start date. Each internship lasts between one and four months in order to accommodate school schedules.

Prospective interns must have completed their sophomore year in college. Applicants are encouraged to negotiate with their college registrar's office to receive academic credit for their internships. At this time the internship pays $15 per day for lunch and daily travel expenses.

Duties consist primarily of office work: answering phones, sorting and sending out mail, copying, filing and organizing. On occasion, some editorial and publicity work may be involved, but applicants should bear in mind that most of the chores tend to the clerical. Previous office experience is preferred but not mandatory. Applicants must be currently enrolled in college (preferably in literature, publishing, or related fields).

TO APPLY

Send a cover letter stating your desired start date and explaining your interest in New Directions, along with your resume, to:

and make sure to have "Internship at New Directions" in the subject heading. No phone calls, please.
